THE COMMUNITY DESIGN CENTER
OF PITTSBURGH
Renovation Information Network (RIN)

The Community Design Center of Pittsburgh (CDCP) is a non-profit Pittsburgh organization that encourages improvements in design at the neighborhood level.

CDCP wished to develop and implement the Renovation Information Network (RIN), an education and consulting program for city homeowners who renovate their properties. CDCP awarded the RIN project to AiH Group who produced "Rediscover the Simple Pleasures of Home" which included:

  • a signature brochure
  • poster
  • flyer
  • set of fact sheets
  • a binder containing forms and references for use by the volunteer architects who provide consultations
The materials subsequently received the Preservation Publication Award from Preservation Pennsylvania, a state-wide historic preservation organization based in Harrisburg, PA and the City of Pittsburgh Mayor's Award for Best Historic Preservation materials.
The cover of the signature brochure urges homeowners to "Rediscover the Simple Pleasures of Home," e.g., their roof, door, walls, windows and porch. Inside, black and white duotones showcase fellow Pittsburghers who have renovated exterior elements of their homes in a manner consistent with the home's original design. Screens of residential blueprints provide background for text.
Captions accompanying each photograph highlight the benefit of design integrity.

Collateral materials include a set of five fact sheets, each of which highlights renovation information about a different exterior element of a home. The fact sheets address design integrity, maintenance, and energy savings in simple, straight-forward prose and include sketches of "right and wrong" renovations to the element in question along with a sampler drawing of typical Pittsburgh doors, windows, porches, roofs or walls.
